Trading rewards, points and airdrops: how much are they really worth?

Some points programs turned into real money, and some turned into nothing. When you trade on these venues, they count your activity as points; later they may launch their own token and hand some of it to whoever has the most points — or they may never launch anything. One venue gave the people who earned points almost a third of its new token; another handed out points for a year and then nothing at all. A point is worth whatever the venue decides later, and almost every rulebook says it can change its mind.

The reason points feel exciting is that a few of them really did pay. Hyperliquid ran a points program from November 2023, and on 29 November 2024 it launched its HYPE token with 31% of the whole supply going to the people who had earned points, with no slice for private investors or exchanges. Hyperliquid no longer publishes that split on its own site, so treat the exact figure as reported rather than official, and its documentation now describes the program in the past tense with no new phase running.

Other venues followed with smaller slices, and several have handed out nothing at all. A payout only exists once a token actually launches and you actually claim it. Aster's claim window ran for exactly 30 days and anything not claimed went back into the community pool, so some people earned a reward and then lost it simply by not showing up in time.

What nobody publishes in advance is the part you most want to know: how many tokens one point will be worth. Hyperliquid's ratio, Lighter's ratio and any future conversion at Extended are all either unpublished or unconfirmed, which is why you cannot price a point while you are earning it. If you want a closer look at one of these venues as a place to trade rather than as a points machine, the Hyperliquid page and the Lighter page cover fees, markets and access.

Binance Alpha Points: how they are counted and how fast they expire

Binance's version of points is called Alpha Points, counted daily with a snapshot at 23:59:59 UTC. Your daily total is Balance Points plus Volume Points, and your score is the sum of the last 15 days — each point expires exactly 15 days after the day you earned it. Balance Points come from what you hold: $100 to under $1,000 gives 1 point a day, $1,000 to under $10,000 gives 2, $10,000 to under $100,000 gives 3, and $100,000 or more gives 4.

For a futures trader the detail that matters is that Volume Points come only from buying Alpha tokens — roughly $2 of purchases is 1 point, $4 is 2, $8 is 3, and each doubling adds one more. Futures activity itself creates no Volume Points; an open futures position touches your score only through its unrealized profit or loss inside the balance snapshot. Since 22 October 2025, Volume Points and task points count for nothing on a day when your Balance Points are zero, so you need at least $100 in eligible assets, and only the master account earns — splitting money across sub-accounts does not work. Alpha tokens sit in their own corner of the Binance app, and what Alpha, meme coins and the other tabs actually are is a topic of its own.

Points also get used up: when you confirm participation in an Alpha event, they are spent immediately, and joining is optional. Binance has also run campaigns that reward futures volume — between 14 and 28 April 2026, $1,000 of perpetuals volume in Binance Wallet earned 3 Alpha Points, once per account, and still required Balance Points above zero.

Binance futures campaigns and HODLer Airdrops: what counts and what doesn't

Alongside Alpha, Binance runs trading campaigns with real prize pools, and the rules are published in each announcement. A simple one shows the shape of the deal clearly: "Trade Futures & Win" ran from 7 to 20 October 2026 with a 200 BNB pool, and new futures traders who reached 200, 2,000 or 5,000 USDT of volume earned spins paying between 0.0006 and 0.24 BNB. First come, first served, with daily limits, and the announcement says plainly that the bigger rewards have a lower chance of landing. Copy trading, bot and Portfolio Margin volume did not count, sub-accounts were excluded, and the voucher rewards expired within 30 days.

Binance also runs leaderboard contests where several thousand places share one pool, so the money per person near the bottom of the table is small, and eligibility is often limited to certain account levels. Those campaign rules sit in the Binance announcements, which anyone can read without an account. If the trades you were planning already fit one of them, you can open a Binance Futures account and check which contests your account level qualifies for.

One program futures traders often expect to qualify for does not count their trading at all: HODLer Airdrops. Eligibility comes from BNB subscribed to Simple Earn or On-Chain Yields, measured through hourly snapshots taken at random past moments, and the official eligible-product list names only those products plus a couple of wallet staking assets. Futures positions and futures margin are not on that list. The 66th project, OpenGradient, was announced on 30 June 2026 with a 6,400,000 token pool and a 4% per-user cap, and BNB pledged as collateral for a flexible-rate loan was excluded.

How to price a reward: certain fees against a maybe

Here is the calculation that settles most of these decisions. Say a campaign asks for 5,000 USDT of futures volume, counting the opening and the closing side together. At the base Binance taker fee of 0.05%, that volume costs 5,000 × 0.05% = 2.50 USDT in fees, paid for certain, today. The reward in the example above was one spin worth somewhere between 0.0006 and 0.24 BNB, weighted so the big outcome is the rare one, and paid as a voucher that dies in 30 days.

If you were going to trade that volume anyway, the 2.50 USDT is not an extra cost and the spin is a free extra — take it. If you are only adding trades to hit the target, you are spending real money today on something that may never arrive, and trades invented to make up volume are usually worse than the ones you planned. Chasing a volume target also tempts people into bigger size or higher leverage, and that is where the real money goes, not into the 2.50. Put your own numbers in below, and if you want the full picture of what a trade costs beyond the headline fee, the costs section breaks down fees, spread and funding.

What do entry and exit cost?

A limit order that fills immediately counts as taker. Enter your account’s fee rates; the ones here are examples.

Fees for the whole trade
—

Entry—
Exit—
As % of margin—
Break-even price—

Fees are charged on the full size of each fill, not on your margin. That’s why with leverage they look bigger next to the money you put in.

The same arithmetic works on a points venue. Multiply the volume you plan to trade by the taker fee, and that is your certain spend for the season. On the other side sits a number nobody has published: the tokens per point. Some people who traded on Hyperliquid before its token launch got a large payout, and other people farmed a venue for a year and got nothing. Both happened, and neither was announced in advance.

The clause that appears in every rulebook

Read the terms of any points program and the same sentence shows up in different words. Extended's docs say points "are not money and have no guaranteed monetary value" and "do not create a present entitlement to receive tokens". Variational's terms say points "may be set, modified, withheld or cancelled by the Company at any time without prior notice or liability". Lighter's rules say points showing in your account have not been permanently approved and may be reversed, even after the program ends. Hyperliquid reserves the right to change past point distributions. Aster states that its point weightings "remain undisclosed" and that it may cancel or amend any activity at its own discretion. Binance may change eligibility and point calculations at any time, and its calculations are final.

The clearest warning comes from a venue that runs its own program. Extended's documentation tells users not to "trade, deposit, refer others or increase their activity solely for the purpose of obtaining Points", and adds that points are not compensation for taking additional risk. That is the house rule of the people handing out the points — worth taking at face value.

None of this makes the programs a trap. It makes them what they are: a marketing budget the venue controls. Pick a venue because its fees, its markets and its availability where you live suit you, read the terms yourself before signing up, then treat whatever points arrive as a bonus on trading you would have done anyway — never as the reason to trade. If you are after something you can calculate in advance rather than a lottery ticket, the mechanics behind funding payments on a spot plus short position are at least countable before you start.

What exactly is a trading point?

It is a counter the venue keeps on your activity — mostly trading volume, sometimes deposits or holdings. The venue decides the formula, and often does not publish it. If it later launches its own token, it may hand a share of that token to the people with the most points; if it never launches one, the points stay numbers on a screen.

Do futures trades count for Binance HODLer Airdrops?

No. Eligibility comes from BNB subscribed to Simple Earn (Flexible or Locked) or On-Chain Yields, plus a couple of listed wallet staking assets. Futures positions and futures margin are not on the eligible list, and BNB pledged as collateral for a flexible-rate loan is excluded too.

How long do Binance Alpha Points last?

Each point expires exactly 15 days after the snapshot day you earned it, and your score is the rolling sum of the last 15 days. Snapshots happen daily at 23:59:59 UTC, and points are spent the moment you confirm participation in an Alpha event.

Is it worth trading extra volume just to farm points?

Work out the fee first. Your volume multiplied by the taker fee is money you spend for sure, while the reward is a figure nobody has published yet. If the trades fit your plan anyway, take the points; if you are inventing trades to hit a target, you are buying a lottery ticket at a known price.

Which points programs actually paid out?

Hyperliquid (31% of the HYPE supply on 29 November 2024), Aster (704 million ASTER, 8.8%, claimable 17 September to 17 October 2025), Lighter (a quarter of its new LIT token to the traders from its first two points seasons, on 30 December 2025, reported figure) and edgeX (30% of the supply at its 31 March 2026 launch). Extended ended its program without a token, Pacifica's docs mention none, and Variational's $VAR is still only planned for Q4 2026.

Can a venue take my points away after awarding them?

Several say so in writing. Lighter states that visible points are not permanently approved and may be reversed, even after a program ends; Variational may cancel or withhold points at any time; Hyperliquid may change past distributions; Binance may change its point calculations without notice.

Do campaign rewards arrive as cash?

Usually as token or bonus vouchers claimed in the exchange's rewards area, with an expiry date — 30 days in the October 2026 futures campaign. Claim them when they land rather than leaving them to sit.
